What it means

1 min read

Daily NY cut expiry boards are a recurring fixture, and the established pattern is mechanical rather than directional: large strikes sitting near spot act as a temporary magnet, as delta hedging by option writers pulls price toward the level into the cut, with that influence typically evaporating once the expiries roll off. The notable size here is the EUR 4.1bln at 1.1265 in EUR/USD, a strike of a scale that has historically been sufficient to suppress range and damp momentum in the hours preceding the cut when spot trades in its vicinity, particularly on sessions thin on scheduled catalysts. The USD/JPY cluster around 159.00 is the other level of consequence; strikes at round numbers in that pair have on past occasions interacted with official sensitivity to yen weakness, so hedging gravity and verbal intervention risk can operate on the same level from opposite directions. The USD/CHF, USD/CAD and EUR/GBP strikes are meaningful but single-level, and single large expiries have tended to matter only where spot is already close, rather than drawing price from a distance. What separates a pinning session from a non-event is proximity of spot to the strike at the open of New York trade and the absence of a data or central bank catalyst capable of overwhelming the hedging flows. The usual tell is price action immediately after the cut: episodes of this kind frequently see a burst of movement once the gravitational pull is removed, as hedges are unwound and positioning resets.
