Context

A fix set materially weaker than the survey estimate is the standard channel through which the PBoC signals tolerance for depreciation without saying so. The daily mid-point defines the band within which onshore spot can trade, so the gap versus expectations, not the level itself, is the operative signal: a fix above consensus effectively grants the market room to push USDCNY higher, while a fix below consensus has historically been read as resistance to depreciation. Sequencing matters more than any single fix. In past episodes of this kind, one weaker-than-expected print has been noise; a run of them in the same direction has been policy, and sustained gaps have tended to draw follow-through in CNH, the offshore deliverable that trades outside the band and leads when conviction builds. The distinction worth drawing is whether the fix is tracking dollar strength broadly, in which case the CFETS basket stays stable, or whether the basket itself is being allowed to soften, which carries wider implications for regional FX that takes its cue from the renminbi. The follow-ons are the state bank presence in the onshore close, the CNH-CNY spread, and whether tomorrow's estimate gap repeats. As a signal it is deliberate but deniable, which is the point.
