Stocks of crude oil in the US SPR fell to 282.6mln barrels last week.

What it means

A further draw in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve continues a depletion cycle that has left US emergency stocks near multi-decade lows, a process that began with the large emergency releases used to cap prices during the supply shock phase and has only partially reversed since. The mechanical read-through is modest: scheduled releases or sales add barrels to commercial supply at the margin, while the reserve level itself matters mainly as a gauge of how much firepower Washington retains against a future disruption, a constraint that has been noted in every subsequent geopolitical supply scare. The case distinction worth drawing is between drawdown, which is mildly bearish prompt supply, and the shift to refilling, which reverses the flow and puts the government on the buy side of the sour and medium-sour grades the caverns actually hold; past refill announcements have tended to be framed around a price band, effectively communicating a soft floor under WTI. The follow-ons are any announced purchase tenders or cancellations, congressional pressure on mandatory sales, and the pace of releases relative to the commercial crude balance reported in the same weekly data.
