Turkish Overnight Lending Rate (Oct) 39% (Prev. 40%)
What it means
A cut of this size from the CBRT fits the easing pattern the bank has run before under its current leadership: sequential reductions in measured steps, calibrated against the inflation glide path rather than the market's preferred pace. The distinction worth drawing is between the overnight lending rate and the one-week repo, since Turkish policy transmission runs through the corridor and the effective funding rate can sit well away from the headline print; changes to the corridor's edge have historically mattered less for TRY than moves in the operational rate. Episodes of Turkish easing under positive real-rate discipline have tended to be tolerated by the lira as long as the ex-ante real yield cushion over expected inflation is preserved, whereas cuts that outrun disinflation have in past cycles prompted lira pressure and eventual policy reversal. The follow-ons are the accompanying statement language on inflation persistence, any adjustment to reserve requirements or macroprudential settings announced alongside, and the next inflation print, which has functioned as the binding constraint on the pace of cuts in this cycle. The published rate itself is the lagging element; the statement and the corridor arithmetic carry the signal.
