US Kansas Fed Composite Index (Oct) 11 (Prev. 14)

What it means

The Kansas City Fed composite is a second-tier regional manufacturing survey, and a downtick of this size sits within the noise band that has historically kept it a low-priority input for rates. Regional Fed surveys of this kind matter mainly in aggregate: when several move in the same direction in the same month they have tended to front-run the national ISM, which is the print that actually re-prices the front end. The distinction worth drawing is between the composite and its sub-indices, since employment and new orders components have historically carried more signal than the headline, and between factory-side weakness and services, which dominates the composite inflation story. A decline of this modest size, in isolation, has not been the kind of data that shifts Fed communication; it enters the evidence pile rather than moving it. The immediate follow-on is whether the remaining regional surveys and the national ISM corroborate the direction, as confirmation across the survey complex is what has tended to matter for the two-year rather than any single district print.
