Vitol CEO says at end-2026 will find demand has shrunk by about 3mln BPD and the world cannot cope with a larger disruption than today's

  • Oil demand will take a year to recover to 2025 level.

What it means

Remarks from the head of a major physical trader are read less as forecasts than as a check on whether paper balances match what is being bid, offered and stored. A demand shortfall of several million barrels a day is the demand-side case: it usually shows up first in softer prompt timespreads, weaker refinery margins and rising onshore or floating inventories before flat price fully adjusts. The separate claim that the system cannot absorb a bigger disruption is the supply-side case, and it is the one that historically embeds risk premium in prompt crude spreads, key regional differentials, tanker freight and insurance when spare capacity and commercial buffers are thin. Prior form for large traders in tight markets has been to talk around logistics and flows, so the signal is strongest when echoed by other physical houses and by monthly balance revisions rather than by one interview. The immediate tells are whether backwardation holds while inventories build, whether products lead crude lower through cracks, and whether official and agency demand revisions converge toward the trader view. Confirmation would come from that alignment; divergence would leave it as positioning color.
