What it means

An unchanged annual print at a relatively brisk pace leaves the series sitting near the upper end of its recent range, and in-line readings of this kind have historically passed with little lasting effect on the front end of the AUD curve. What matters more than the headline is the split underneath it: housing credit versus business credit behave differently through an RBA tightening or holding cycle, with the housing component the more sensitive tell on whether prior rate settings are biting into mortgage demand, while business credit tends to track investment intentions with a lag. Aggregate credit growth at these sorts of rates has in past episodes fed into the RBA's assessment of financial conditions rather than prompting any direct policy response, and the bank has generally treated the monthly prints as confirmation rather than catalyst. The follow-ons worth noting are the next quarterly GDP and inflation prints, where credit impulse is an input rather than a driver, and any RBA commentary referencing lending conditions. As an in-line secondary release, the signal content is low; the detail, not the headline, is where any repricing case would sit.
