Australian RBA Weighted Median CPI (Sep YY) 3.6% (Prev. 3.6%)

What it means

The weighted median is one of the RBA's two core inflation gauges alongside the trimmed mean, and the Bank has historically treated the pair as its preferred read on underlying momentum rather than the headline print. A median that holds steady at the prior pace matters less for the headline figure itself than for what it implies about the breadth of disinflation: in past Australian episodes, sticky core readings at an unchanged level have tended to keep the RBA in extended-hold mode, since the Board has been explicit that it needs sustained progress, not a single soft print, before easing. The distinction worth drawing is between an unchanged level that reflects stalled progress and one that masks a slowing quarterly run-rate; the quarterly pace inside the release is the sharper signal for the policy path. The follow-ons that have mattered in comparable prints are the monthly CPI indicator sequence and the RBA's next statement and press conference framing, where officials have previously re-anchored expectations by emphasising the gap between core and target. An in-line core print typically leaves front-end pricing close to where it was, with the curve moving more on the details of services and market-sector components than on the median itself.
