Australian Quarterly CPI (Q3 QQ) 1.3% vs. Exp. 1.3% (Prev. 0.6%)

What it means

An in-line headline that nonetheless marks a sharp step up from the prior quarter, and with Australian CPI the market has long treated the trimmed mean, not the headline, as the operative print for RBA pricing, since the Bank has repeatedly framed policy around underlying rather than headline inflation. Australian quarterly releases of this kind tend to sort quickly into two cases: reacceleration driven by administered and housing-linked components, which the Bank has historically been inclined to look through, versus stickiness in services and market-sector prices, which has tended to keep the policy bias restrictive for longer. The introduction of the monthly CPI indicator has reduced the surprise content of the quarterly print somewhat, but the quarterly remains the one that feeds the RBA's preferred underlying gauges and its staff forecasts. The tells are the composition of the rise, the trimmed mean relative to the top of the target band, and how the print positions the next policy meeting's language on whether the Board judges itself restrictive enough. AUD and front-end rates have in comparable episodes traded on the underlying detail rather than a consensus-matching headline.
