Belgian PPI (Sep YY) 13.6% (Prev. 11.4%)

What it means

An acceleration in Belgian producer prices is a second-tier input into the euro-area inflation picture; the transmission runs from factory-gate costs through to consumer goods components of national HICP, but Belgian PPI is among the more volatile national series, heavily exposed to energy and refining, so single-month swings of this size have historically said less about trend than the equivalent prints in the larger economies. The distinction worth drawing is between energy-driven pass-through, which has tended to fade without generating second-round effects, and a broadening across core producer goods, which in past pipeline episodes is what has ultimately fed services and non-energy industrial goods inflation further out. ECB policy is set on the aggregate, and national PPI prints have rarely repriced rate expectations on their own; they matter at the margin when they corroborate or contradict the direction of the euro-area PPI and HICP releases that follow. The relevant follow-ons are the flash euro-area inflation estimate and the pipeline detail in the bloc-wide PPI, alongside whether the pick-up is mirrored in neighbouring economies with similar energy exposures. Belgian government bond spreads trade on fiscal and political drivers rather than data of this kind, so the read-across is to the euro inflation narrative, not to Belgian assets specifically.
