Italian CPI Prel (Oct MM) 0.9% vs. Exp. 0.3% (Prev. 0.7%)

What it means

A preliminary monthly CPI beat of this size in Italy is most often a seasonal or administered-price story rather than a demand signal: October prints have historically been prone to swings from regulated energy components, package holidays and transport fares, and the national index is more volatile month-on-month than the harmonised measure. The distinction that matters is between the national CPI, which this is, and the HICP, since it is the harmonised print that feeds the euro-area aggregate and the ECB reaction function; the two have diverged on previous occasions, which has muted the follow-through from the flash national release. On the transmission side, a domestic inflation surprise of this kind has tended to move BTPs mainly through the spread to Bunds rather than through outright euro rates, unless the beat is echoed in the other large member-state flash prints due around the same window. The items worth watching are the detail, particularly services versus energy and administered goods, and the HICP print, which confirms or dismisses the signal for the ECB path. As a preliminary release it is subject to revision, and single-month monthly readings of this kind have historically been treated as noise absent corroboration in the year-on-year rate.
