Irish GDP Growth Rate Prel (Q3 QQ) 5.5% (Prev. 10.2%)

What it means

Irish headline GDP is one of the least policy-informative prints in the euro area release calendar, since the figure is dominated by the activities of multinational enterprises: contract manufacturing booked to Ireland, intellectual property onshoring and aircraft leasing flows can swing the quarterly rate violently without any corresponding movement in domestic income or employment. A deceleration of the magnitude shown here has, in past episodes, been a standard feature of Irish national accounts, where double-digit quarterly moves in both directions are routine and frequently reversed or heavily revised. The channel that matters for domestic analysis is the modified domestic demand and GNI* measures published alongside, which strip out the globalisation effects and are the figures the Irish fiscal authorities and the central bank themselves treat as the operative series. For euro area aggregates the distortion also passes through, with Irish volatility periodically adding noise to bloc-level GDP that forecasters tend to look through. The follow-ons of interest are the expenditure breakdown behind the move, particularly any large intellectual property or aircraft imports component, and the accompanying domestic demand measure, which determines whether the print says anything about the Irish economy at all.
