Belgian CPI (Oct YY) 5.26% (Prev. 4.69%)

What it means

The national measure has accelerated on the year-on-year print. Belgian CPI matters less for rate pricing in its own right than as a feed into the euro area aggregate: ECB pricing keys off the harmonised HICP, and the national and harmonised readings can diverge materially on methodology and coverage, so the distinction between the two gauges is the first filter on this print. Belgian inflation has historically run hot relative to peers on the back of automatic wage indexation and energy pass-through, a channel that tends to keep its series elevated even when the bloc-wide trend is disinflating, and that same indexation mechanism has drawn attention in past episodes for entrenching second-round effects. The follow-ons are the Belgian HICP reading and the flash euro area print for the same month, which determine whether this feeds the aggregates the Governing Council actually trades off. For a mid-sized open economy, national CPI alone rarely reprices the front end; its weight comes through the bloc-wide figure.
