Atlanta Fed GDPnow Model (Q3): 3.5% (prev. 3.4%)

What it means

GDPNow is a running nowcast rather than a survey: it mechanically re-aggregates the same source data that feed the BEA's advance estimate, so revisions of this size, a tenth here or there, reflect incoming prints rather than any change in the Atlanta Fed's view. The nowcast has historically been most informative early in the quarter and tends to converge toward the eventual print as the quarter matures; late-quarter revisions are mostly housekeeping around consumption, inventories and net trade, the components that drive the bulk of its tracking error. The distinction worth drawing is between a revision driven by hard activity data, which carries signal about underlying momentum, and one driven by inventory or trade accounting, which often reverses. At levels implying growth comfortably above trend, the transmission channel runs through the rates market's read on how much slack the Fed sees, steepening or flattening the front end depending on whether the composition looks durable. The follow-ons are the remaining source releases that still feed the estimate and any Fed commentary that acknowledges or dismisses the implied pace; the nowcast itself has no policy weight. Directionally, a small upward revision of this kind is within the model's normal revision noise and rarely moves markets on its own.
