Japanese Industrial Production Prel (Sep MM) 2.2% vs. Exp. 1.3% (Prev. -2.4%)

What it means

A bounce of this size off a prior contraction is the standard profile of Japanese industrial output, where the series is notoriously volatile on a month-to-month basis and single prints, in either direction, rarely alter the macro picture on their own. The preliminary METI release is also subject to material revision at the final estimate, so the headline beat is the least reliable part of the signal; what carries more weight is the forward-looking component, namely the production forecasts surveyed from manufacturers for the following two months, which in past episodes have been the better guide to the trend and tend to be revised down. The worth-drawing distinction is between a rebound driven by autos and machinery recovering from a disruption and one reflecting genuine export or capex momentum, since only the latter has historically had any bearing on the Bank of Japan's assessment. Central bank responses to single output prints have been muted through past cycles; it is the accumulation of activity, wage and price data that has moved policy expectations and the front end of the JGB curve, and with it the yen. Follow-ons are the final IP estimate, machinery orders and the next trade data, which together test whether the recovery in output is being matched on the external side.
