Japanese Tokyo CPI Ex Food and Energy (Oct YY) 2.4% vs. Exp. 2.7% (Prev. 2.7%)

What it means

Tokyo CPI functions as the established lead indicator for the national print, typically by a few weeks, and misses on the core-core measure have historically carried more weight for the policy debate than the headline or fresh-food-excluded gauges because this is the series the Bank of Japan leans on for underlying trend. A downside surprise on this measure cuts against the inflation-persistence narrative that has been the precondition for policy normalisation, and in past episodes a soft Tokyo print has tended to push out rate-hike pricing at the short end rather than reprice the whole path. The distinction worth drawing is between a one-month dip, which officials have historically looked through, and a consecutive run below the bank's underlying estimates, which is what has previously altered the cadence of tightening. The follow-ons are the national CPI release, the accompanying Board commentary on services inflation and wage pass-through, and whether the miss is concentrated in goods or extends to the services components the bank watches most closely. JPY and front-end JGB pricing are the usual transmission channels, with the move typically fading if subsequent prints hold the trend.
