New Zealand NZIER Shadow Board recommends the RBNZ hike the OCR by 25bps to 2.75% at its meeting this week

Tour the PlatformShadow board recommendations are advisory exercises rather than decision signals; NZIER's panel of economists and business figures has no seat at the table, and the OCR decision itself rests with the RBNZ's committee. The historical read on such bodies is that they tend to track the distribution of private-sector forecast opinion more than they lead it, so the value here is as a gauge of where the consensus sits ahead of the meeting rather than as new information about the bank's reaction function. The distinction worth drawing is between the recommendation and the rationale: if the case for a hike rests on persistent domestic inflation pressure and capacity constraints, that argument will be tested by the bank's own statement and any updated projections, which is where the real signal lies. A 25bp step to that level, if delivered, would keep New Zealand within the tightening posture that has characterised the more hawkish small open economies, where the transmission channel runs through the floating mortgage rate structure and hence relatively quickly into household cash flow and the currency. Worth noting is how the decision is framed relative to the shadow board's call: a hike accompanied by guidance that the committee sees the job as largely done reads very differently for the front end and for NZD than one flagging more to come. The follow-ons are the statement language, any published rate track, and the Governor's press conference tone.
