PBoC is expected to set USD/CNY mid-point at 6.6596 (prev. 6.7165)
What it means
The daily mid-point is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument for the yuan, and the information content lies less in the level than in the gap between the fix and where models based on the prior close and the overnight dollar move would place it. A materially stronger fix than the previous setting, as flagged here, has historically been read as the authorities leaning against depreciation pressure or endorsing appreciation, with the countercyclical factor the usual channel when the fix persistently deviates from model estimates. The distinction worth drawing is between a fix that merely tracks a softer dollar and one that deviates from it: the former is mechanical, the latter is a policy signal and tends to steer USDCNH and the broader Asia FX complex through the session. Precedent in managed regimes is that repeated fixings in one direction matter more than any single print, so the run of fixes and the onshore spot's position within the trading band are the tells. Follow-ons include state bank dollar activity around the fix, offshore-forward points, and any move in the CFETS basket, which separates bilateral dollar moves from genuine yuan policy.
