PBoC is expected to set USD/CNY midpoint at 6.6625 (prev. 6.7138)

What it means

The daily midpoint is the PBoC's primary signalling channel for the currency, and the information content sits in the gap between the modelled expectation and the actual print rather than in the level itself. A fix materially stronger than models imply has historically been read as the countercyclical factor being deployed to lean against depreciation pressure; a fix in line with or weaker than models is read as tolerance for market-driven moves. The distinction that matters is whether a stronger fix is a one-day smoothing operation or the start of a sustained pattern, since persistent gaps between fix and models have preceded shifts in how tightly the onshore rate is managed against the basket. The follow-ons are the offshore-onshore spread, which widens when the fix is fighting the market, and any state-bank dollar selling in the onshore session, which would confirm the fix as active defence rather than passive setting. Fixings of this kind also feed directly into the regional FX complex, since Asian peers tend to take their cue from the direction the PBoC is steering.
