UK July ONS House Price Index 1.4% (prev. 2%)
The ONS house price series is the lagging member of the UK housing data complex, built on completed transactions rather than asking prices or mortgage approvals, so it typically confirms what the lender indices and survey data signalled months earlier rather than breaking new ground.

A deceleration of this kind in the official series is therefore read through the lens of the leading indicators, approvals, RICS balances, the Nationwide and Halifax prints, which have historically front-run turns in the ONS measure. The transmission to sterling runs through the rates channel: softer housing activity feeds the consumer and credit outlook and, at the margin, the MPC's comfort with restrictive policy, though housing prints alone have rarely been the decisive input in past deliberations. The distinction worth drawing is between a cooling in prices and a cooling in transactions; the latter carries the heavier read-across to activity and stamp duty receipts. Follow-ons are the mortgage approvals data and the tone of the next MPC commentary rather than any revision to this release, which on previous occasions has been modest.
