UK Lloyds Business Barometer (Aug) 53 (Prev. 49)
The Lloyds barometer is a second-tier UK sentiment gauge, and readings in the low 50s sit at the firmer end of its recent range, so a four-point rise is directionally notable even if the index rarely moves sterling or gilts on its own. Its function has historically been corroborative: episodes where it has risen alongside the PMI surveys have tended to confirm an improving growth impulse, while divergences between the two have usually been resolved in favour of the larger-sample PMIs. The split worth noting within the release is between headline confidence and its components, hiring intentions and pricing expectations, since it is the latter that has fed into Bank of England thinking on domestically generated inflation rather than the sentiment number itself. The immediate follow-ons are the official activity and labour data and whether the next PMI prints point the same way. As a single private survey the signal is soft; confirmation or contradiction from the broader survey complex is what has mattered in past cycles.
