US Dallas Fed Manufacturing Index (Oct) 13.4 (Prev. 9.8)

What it means

A firm beat on the Dallas Fed's headline index puts it in the middle of the regional survey round, which has historically served as an early read on the national manufacturing gauges rather than a market mover in its own right. The regional Feds have a long record of correlating loosely with ISM and the national PMIs, but the correlation is strongest on direction and weakest on magnitude, and Texas surveys carry an energy-sector tilt that can pull them away from the national picture when crude is moving. The subcomponents tend to matter more than the headline here: new orders and the six-month outlook have historically done more to set the tone for the national releases than the general activity index, while employment subindices get more attention when the labour market is the Fed's stated focus. As a single soft data point it rarely re-prices anything; the established pattern is for USD and front-end rates to respond to it only in aggregates, once the other regionals have printed and the ISM consensus starts to shift. The worth-watching follow-on is whether the Richmond, Kansas City and Chicago prints run in the same direction, since clustered regional strength or weakness has preceded ISM surprises more reliably than any one survey in isolation.
