US Durable Goods Orders (Sep MM) 1.8% vs. Exp. 1.5% (Prev. 0.1%)

What it means

A modest beat on headline durable goods, but the headline series is among the most distorted prints in the US calendar: civilian aircraft bookings swing it month to month, and single large transport orders have produced outsized moves in both directions before now. The professional read has always run through the ex-transport figure and, more importantly, nondefense capital goods orders ex aircraft, which is the accepted proxy for business equipment capex intentions, with the shipments component feeding directly into the GDP equipment-investment line. Episodes where a firm headline sits alongside a soft core have tended to see the initial front-end and dollar response fade within the session; the reverse configuration has proven the more durable signal. The upward tilt against the prior near-flat reading adds some weight, but the composition matters more than the aggregate. Follow-ons are the capital-goods detail within this release and how it maps into the next GDP estimate, alongside any revision history, which in this series has been substantial.
