Newsquawk Staff ·

  • Exports to US fell to 449,000 bpd.
  • Exports to Europe increased to some 235,000 bpd.
  • Chevron's (CVX) exports of Venezuelan crude up to 303,000 bpd, traders exported 506,000 bpd

What it means

Venezuelan export prints of this kind have historically been read less for the headline volume than for the composition beneath it, and this one fits that pattern: flat overall flows masking a rotation from the US toward Europe, the two destinations that have alternated as the marginal outlet depending on the state of US licensing. The split between Chevron's own liftings and trader-carried barrels is the tell that matters. Chevron volumes move with the cadence of its authorisation, while trader barrels are the flexible tranche that expands or contracts with sanctions enforcement and the discount at which sanctioned-grade crude clears; shifts between the two have tended to precede rather than follow policy announcements. For heavy-sour balances, Venezuelan barrels compete directly with Mexican and Canadian grades into the Gulf Coast, so a sustained decline in US-bound flows tightens that specific part of the sour slate rather than the global crude balance, which is where the price sensitivity has sat in comparable episodes. Worth watching are the next month's shipping data for whether the European rise is a one-off diversion or a trend, and any licensing signals out of Washington, since Chevron's authorised volumes have historically been the lever through which Venezuelan supply to the US has been turned on and off.
