Brazilian IGP-M Inflation (Oct MM) 1.47% vs. Exp. 1.6% (Prev. 1.57%)

What it means

The IGP-M is a wholesale-weighted measure, heavily influenced by producer prices and tradables, so its swings tend to track the exchange rate and commodity complex more closely than the IPCA consumer gauge the central bank formally targets. A miss against consensus in this series has historically mattered less for the Selic path than the IPCA prints, but it feeds into the pipeline read on upstream price pressure and is contractually significant in its own right: a large share of Brazilian rental and some utility contracts are indexed to IGP-M, so the print flows mechanically into administered and housing components downstream. The usual sequence is that softer wholesale readings precede, with a lag, easing in the producer-to-consumer pass-through, though the transmission weakens when the currency is under pressure. Worth watching is whether the IPCA releases confirm the same direction, since divergence between wholesale disinflation and sticky services CPI has in past episodes left the central bank cautious despite benign upstream data. The calendar follow-ons are the IPCA prints and central bank communications for any shift in the easing or tightening bias.
