[MARKET ANALYSIS] Demand is contained central bank meetings and supply loom

Newsquawk Staff ·

USTs: +1 tick

  • Lacks conviction after recent curve flattening as markets await FOMC, tech earnings, and PCE data, while the latest US 5yr note auction is scheduled later.

Bunds: +10 ticks

-Edges higher following recent whipsawing through the 122.00 level, but with upside capped as supply looms with a EUR 5bln Schatz issuance due today followed by EUR 5.5bln of Bunds tomorrow.

JGBs: -14 ticks

  • Demand is contained as stocks rally in Tokyo and after Services PPI data matched estimates, while Japan will conduct an enhanced liquidity auction for longer-dated JGBs today.

What it means

Pre-central-bank sessions in rates have a well-established template: ranges compress, moves lack conviction, and positioning dominates over flow, with the FOMC, heavy data (here PCE) and event risk in equities all acting as volatility suppressants into the decision. The transatlantic divergence on display is the familiar one, USTs pinned by the data-and-auction calendar while Bunds trade supply first, since the Schatz/Bund sequence is the kind of front-end and belly issuance that caps rallies regardless of the prevailing bid; concession-building into two consecutive German sales has historically been the dominant intraday driver when macro catalysts sit later in the week. The JGB leg is the more instructive one: enhanced liquidity auctions for longer maturities are a distinct animal from standard supply, and their reception in the super-long sector has in past episodes been a cleaner read on domestic demand than the Services PPI print, which at consensus carries no repricing burden. The tell for USTs is the 5yr auction itself, since a weak tail ahead of the Fed has tended to set the tone for how the belly trades into the statement. Recent curve flattening as the backdrop matters, since flattened curves into FOMC meetings have historically left the belly most exposed to any repricing of the path.
