[MARKET UPDATE] : Markets chop to FOMC and Axios report

Newsquawk Staff ·

The knee-jerk reaction to the Fed rate decision was dovish, with equities, T-notes and gold rising, while the Dollar was briefly sold. However, the moves were immediately pared.

To recap, the Fed held as expected, but Cook and Hammack dissented in favour of a 25bps hike. The statement added a line to emphasise its data-dependent approach, stating that accumulating more information will help determine the appropriate policy stance. It also upgraded its description of growth to "strong" from "solid".

Meanwhile, Axios reported that Iran is being pressed to make nuclear concessions as massive post-midterm strikes loom, according to sources. Mediators are warning Iran that accepting the proposals may be its only way to avert major attacks after the midterms, according to a regional source and a US official.

The Axios report led to upside in energy prices and weighed on equities, T-notes and gold, while the Dollar climbed.

What it means

Two distinct impulses competed here, and the sequencing is the story. On the Fed side, a hold with dissents in favour of a hike is a historically hawkish configuration: dissent toward tightening at an unchanged decision has tended to mark the committee's centre of gravity shifting, and it is the direction of the dissents rather than their number that carries the signal. The upgraded growth language and the added emphasis on accumulating information point the same way, which explains why the initial dovish knee-jerk in equities, T-notes and gold was faded almost immediately, a familiar pattern when the headline masks a hawkish subtext and the statement text takes a few minutes to be parsed. The Axios report then imposed a classic geopolitical overlay: crude bid on supply-risk premium, equities and duration offered, dollar firmer on the haven bid, with gold caught between the two forces. Episodes of threatened Middle East escalation have typically traded in headline-driven increments, with the premium in energy building or bleeding on each confirmation or denial rather than on scheduled catalysts. The follow-ons worth watching are the press conference and any subsequent official commentary for whether the hawkish dissents find company, and on the geopolitical side any Iranian response or mediator statement, since that wire traffic, not the calendar, sets the next move.
