Pressure seen in fixed income, particularly USTs, to the benefit of the USD and detriment of other FX peers against it. Modest upside seen in energy.

What it means

A session where UST selling leads and the dollar follows against its peers fits the well-worn rates-over-FX sequencing: in episodes of this kind the yield differential, particularly at the front end where policy expectations sit, does the transmission work, and high-beta and funding currencies tend to underperform in rough proportion to their rate sensitivity. The simultaneous modest bid in energy is a familiar companion when the selloff in duration reflects growth or inflation resilience rather than a pure risk event; the distinction worth drawing is whether crude is trading off the same reflation impulse or off its own supply story, since the former tends to unwind with the rates move while the latter persists. Whether the dollar's gains extend has historically depended less on the size of the UST move than on whether foreign yields follow: if peers' curves sell off in sympathy the differential compresses and the FX leg fades, while a rates move confined to the US side has tended to be the more durable configuration for the dollar. Worth noting is where on the UST curve the pressure is concentrated, since front-end-led selling points to policy repricing and long-end-led selling to term premium or supply dynamics, and the two have carried different implications for how FX follows. The next tells are the auction and data calendar and whether the move holds into the close rather than retracing in quieter trade.
