ASIA

APAC stocks were mostly pressured following on from the declines in global peers alongside the recent bond turmoil and jump in yields, owing to several factors including strong US data, hawkish Fed rhetoric and mixed reports regarding a US diesel export ban. ASX 200 retreated with the declines led by weakness in miners, real estate and materials, while sentiment was not helped by mixed jobs data including an unexpected rise in the Unemployment Rate to a five-year high. Nikkei 225 outperformed after Japanese participants returned from the long weekend and with tech names playing catch-up to the recent AI-related momentum. Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp retreated despite early optimism from President Xi's state visit to the US, while a two-month extension to the US-China trade truce until January 10th also failed to spur risk appetite.

Context

The dominant macro thread here is a rates-driven risk fade, with APAC and US weakness attributed to strong US data and hawkish Fed commentary pushing yields higher, the classic sequence in which rate-sensitive sectors (utilities, real estate, communication services) lead declines while energy holds up, a pattern consistent with the sector breakdown shown. The UK Treasury deliberation over a smaller fiscal buffer than the OBR assumes is the kind of story that has historically mattered more for gilts and sterling than for the FTSE, since reduced headroom raises the supply and credibility question rather than the growth one. On the corporate side, the LVMH holding-structure simplification continues a long-running streamlining of the Arnault control chain, the LNG Canada FID adds to a lengthening list of sanctioned liquefaction capacity that feeds medium-term supply balances, and the diverted F-35 components story slots into the established US-China security-friction file, which in past episodes has been a slow-burn headline risk for defence and logistics names rather than an immediate repricing event. The trade-truce extension failing to lift Chinese equities fits the pattern of truce headlines losing marginal impact as they become routine.
