PBoC is expected to set USD/CNY mid-point at 6.6734 (prev. 6.7171)

What it means

The daily mid-point is the PBoC's primary signalling channel for the renminbi: the onshore rate is permitted to trade only within a band around the fix, so where the fix is set effectively caps how far spot can run in either direction that session. A fix materially stronger than the prior close, as expected here, marks a firmer renminbi bias, and the historical read on such moves depends less on the level than on the gap between the actual fix and what models project from the overnight dollar move, since persistent deviations in one direction are how the authorities have conventionally communicated discomfort with depreciation or appreciation pressure. The counter-cyclical adjustment factor, when in use, has been the mechanism through which that smoothing is delivered, and its presence is inferred rather than announced. Follow-ons worth noting are the onshore-offshore spread, since a widening gap has in past episodes signalled speculative pressure the fix alone could not contain, and any accompanying liquidity operations or state-bank dollar selling that would corroborate the signal. A firmer fix has historically fed through to broader Asia FX and, at the margin, to the dollar complex via the CNY weighting in trade-weighted baskets.
