PBoC sets USD/CNY midpoint at 6.7138 vs exp. 6.6548 (prev. 6.7147)

What it means

The signal in a daily fixing lies in the gap against modelled consensus, not the level itself, and a print materially weaker than estimates is the established way the PBoC signals tolerance for depreciation without overtly weakening the currency. On previous occasions where the fixing has consistently come through the weak side of expectations, the pattern has been for onshore spot to test the upper end of its trading band while the central bank manages the pace through the countercyclical factor and state bank activity in the spot market, rather than through the fix alone. The distinction worth drawing is between a one-off weak fix, which tends to fade within a session, and a sequence of them, which has historically marked a deliberate policy shift and pulled the offshore rate through the onshore band edge. The relevant tells are whether subsequent fixings repeat the bias, the behaviour of the CNH-CNY spread as the cleaner offshore signal of pressure, and any shift in reserve or FX positioning data that reveals how much the move is being resisted. This is a fixing, not a policy statement, so the signal is directional until the pattern repeats.
