PBoC sets USD/CNY midpoint at 6.7165 vs exp. 6.6734 (prev. 6.7171)

What it means

The read here is not the level but the gap against model estimates, which is unusually wide and on the weaker side: the midpoint came in materially above where countercyclical-factor-adjusted models had it, meaning the PBoC declined to lean against depreciation pressure this morning. Historically the signal content of the daily fix has run through precisely this deviation rather than the fix itself; in past episodes of sustained CNY weakness, consistently stronger-than-modelled fixes have marked active resistance, while fixes tracking or undershooting model estimates have been read as tolerance for further adjustment, and the distinction has tended to set the tone for the CNH-CNY spread and for state-bank dollar offers in the onshore session. Note also that the fix is essentially flat on the prior day, so the policy signal is passive rather than a deliberate step weaker: the authorities are accommodating where spot already sits rather than pushing it. The follow-ons are the open of onshore trade and whether spot immediately tests the weak side of the 2 percent band, any visible state-bank flow, the offshore-forward points, and the CFETS basket, which shows whether this is a dollar story or yuan-specific. A sequence of similar fixes over coming sessions has historically mattered more than any single print. Watch whether the pattern repeats tomorrow.
