US CB Employment Trends (Jul) 107.71 (prev. 106.69)
The Conference Board's Employment Trends Index is a second-tier composite that aggregates a set of labour indicators already in the public domain, so on its own it has rarely repriced anything; its value has historically been directional confirmation of the underlying jobs trend rather than new information. A sequential rise of this kind signals continued labour market firmness at the margin, and episodes where the index has turned have tended to lead the more heavily traded labour prints rather than compete with them. The distinction worth drawing is between the level, which says little, and the direction and persistence of the trend, which is what desks have used it for. The proximate calendar items are the next payrolls, claims and JOLTS releases, which remain the inputs that actually move the front end; this print feeds sentiment around those rather than standing alone. As a low-frequency composite, the read is confirmatory.
