US Retail Inventories Ex Autos Adv (Sep MM) 0.4% (Prev. 0%)

What it means

Advance retail inventories is one of the lower-tier inputs in the US data calendar, feeding into the quarterly GDP inventory contribution estimate rather than moving rates or the dollar on its own. A build of this kind after a flat prior month is the sort of reading that gets folded into the arithmetic on inventory accumulation alongside the wholesale and manufacturing prints in the same advance series; the distinction that matters is whether the build is deliberate restocking against solid sales or involuntary accumulation against softening demand, since the former is neutral-to-positive for the growth estimate and the latter tends to precede destocking drag in subsequent quarters. Without the corresponding retail sales detail, the print alone cannot separate the two cases. The tell is the ratio of inventories to sales rather than the month-on-month level, and whether the wholesale and manufacturing inventory readings from the same release point the same way. Revisions to the GDP tracking estimates from the major houses are the natural follow-on, and those have historically been modest on this series absent a large surprise.
