US Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index (Oct) -2 vs. Exp. 0 (Prev. -2)

What it means

Regional Fed manufacturing surveys are the lowest tier of the factory data calendar: they move markets only when they confirm or contradict the signal from the larger gauges, chiefly the ISM, and occasionally the Philly or Empire prints. A modest miss against a flat prior, as here, sits well within the noise band these surveys carry; episodes of this kind have tended to leave Treasuries and the dollar unmoved unless the reading points the same way as a cluster of other releases. The mechanism, when there is one, runs through the front end via changed expectations for the Fed's read on manufacturing momentum, not through the survey itself. The components matter more than the headline: new orders, shipments and employment subindices have historically been better guides to the ISM direction than the composite. Worth noting is whether the other district surveys released in the same window print in the same direction, since a coordinated regional downturn is what has actually repriced policy expectations in past cycles. As a single second-tier print, this is informational rather than tradable.
