US Richmond Fed Manufacturing Shipments Index (Oct) 0 (Prev. -5)

What it means

The Richmond Fed survey sits in the second tier of US manufacturing data, one of five regional Fed indices that traders scan for an early read on the national ISM, and it has historically been among the noisier of the set, with a looser correlation to the national gauge than the Empire or Philadelphia surveys. A subindex print moving from negative territory back to zero is the kind of month-to-month chop these series produce routinely; on past occasions it has taken a run of consecutive readings, rather than a single month, to shift the regional narrative. The distinction worth drawing is between the headline diffusion index and its components: shipments, new orders and employment have at times told different stories within the same release, and new orders has tended to be the more informative leading component. Market reaction to Richmond Fed releases alone has typically been minimal in Treasuries and the dollar, with the survey mattering mainly when it confirms or contradicts the direction set by the other regional prints and the hard data in the same week. The follow-ons are the remaining regional surveys and the ISM itself, against which this print is ultimately judged. As a single subindex reading, the signal is soft.
