BoJ Core CPI YY (Sep) 3.2% (Prev. 2.6%)

What it means

An acceleration of this size in the core measure is the kind of print that has historically mattered less for its level than for whether it feeds the Bank's own reflation narrative: the BoJ has tended to look through single prints and respond to the persistence of underlying services momentum and wage-linked price setting. The distinction that has mattered in past episodes is between cost-push readings driven by energy and import prices, which the Bank has consistently treated as transitory, and demand-driven breadth in services, which is what has shifted its policy stance. Transmission runs first through JGB yields and the belly of the curve, and from there into the yen via the narrowing or widening of rate differentials with the front ends of other G10 curves. The follow-ons are the accompanying detail, the split between goods and services and the trimmed-mean and other underlying gauges, plus whether subsequent official commentary treats the print as validating tightening conditions. One monthly release rarely moves policy on its own; the pattern has been that a sequence of upside readings, reinforced at the next meeting's forecasts, is what reprices the path.
