USTs: +4 ticks

  • Ekes slight gains in otherwise uneventful trade, with upside limited amid higher oil prices and as participants await the rate decision from the Fed this week, while US President Trump reiterated his call for the US to have the lowest interest rates in the world.

Bunds: +11 ticks

  • Trades marginally higher and gets some reprieve from last week's selling pressure, but with the rebound contained following hawkish rhetoric from ECB officials.

JGBs: +11 ticks

  • Conforms to the slightly positive performance in global counterparts although price action is somewhat choppy as markets brace for the key rate decisions from the Fed and BoJ, with money markets heavily leaning towards both central banks hiking rates.
Context

The small concurrent upticks across USTs, Bunds and JGBs fit the pattern of a mild relief bid after prior selling rather than a fresh view, with the upside capped where hawkish official rhetoric or higher crude works against duration. Two distinctions matter here. First, a Fed decision priced toward tightening transmits through the front end and money-market strip, while oil strength works on the inflation premium further out; the two pull in opposite directions on the curve. Second, the Japanese leg is the more fragile one, since JGB price action into a BoJ meeting has historically been the most prone to a sharp repricing when the policy adjustment or its guidance deviates from positioning. Political pressure on the Fed for lower rates is a recurring feature of easing and tightening cycles alike and has tended to move rhetoric more than the policy path. The follow-ons are the decisions themselves, the guidance language, and whether the front-end pricing cited in money markets survives the press conferences.
