US Dallas Fed Services Revenues Index (Oct) 4.4 (Prev. -0.9)

What it means

A swing from negative territory back into expansion is the kind of print that in isolation reads as a stabilisation signal, but regional Fed services surveys sit well down the pecking order and have rarely repriced anything beyond the immediate seconds. The Dallas series is among the more volatile of the regional set, and single-month flips across the zero line have historically reversed as often as they have persisted, which is why the pattern that matters is a run of two or three prints in the same direction rather than any one observation. The transmission channel, when there is one, runs through confirmation or contradiction of the national services surveys and the ISM services print later in the cycle, since that is the series the FOMC's centre of gravity has tended to watch when judging whether the services side of the economy is cooling. A positive revenue reading sits awkwardly with a softening-services narrative and mildly supportive of a resilient one, and prior episodes of divergence between regional and national services gauges have usually resolved in favour of the national print. Worth observing is whether the employment and wages subcomponents moved with the headline, as labour detail in these surveys has carried more signal for the rates path than the revenue line itself.
